Mobile Bay Fishing Report: May 2014 (III)

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]an is the year flying bye. May is already here. Folks, the bay water is heating up and so is the trout action!!! The trout have made the transition from the deep rivers and holes to the open bays looking for saltwater to spawn. The brown shrimp are on the move inland and the birds are starting to give away hungry trout gorging on the easy meal. The inshore reefs along the Eastern Shore are holding some good legal trout and some black drum.

Starting this month, the trout will start spawning on every full moon. Look for some good action right up to the moon and then two days after. The flounder have been a little behind this year due to the cold muddy water coming down the rivers and pouring into the bay. They should start to show up around the normal spots along the flats in Theodore Industrial canal and under the I-10 bridges. White or chartreuse curly tail grubs work really well bumped slowly along the bottom or you can go with the reliable bull minnow. The reds have moved out over the flats and are cruising the channels in north pass and in Devils cut. Live shrimp Carolina rigged are deadly. Schools nearly out, so get that boat all shined up and get ready for some summertime fun filling the cooler with some tasty fillets!! Hope to see you on the water!!
