MAY WE GO OUT AND PLAY?

As I sit in quarantine writing this article, I cannot help but feel like Mother Nature has put us all in “timeout”. This begs the question that everyone wants to know, “May we go out and play?” We sit patiently, rods in hand, faces pressed against the glass. It seems like it is Ground Hogs days and Bill Murray is no longer our friend but a terrible cosmic foe. For those of you who were lucky enough to take advantage of the decreased boat traffic; how was it? Talk dirty to me. Don’t be stingy, share with your friends!

All joking aside, we all know the gravity of the situation, but levity can sooth the soul. This is a time when our morals and values shine as we in our industry are always practicing the mariners code, “If you see someone in distress, help them.” I hope you and your families are safe, secure and above all, healthy through this time.

Now, when Mama finally says, “Go play!” it will feel like a shot gun start. Adrenaline will kick in like a kid on Christmas. Not only will boaters be back on the water, but we will see many of our inshore game fish focused on spawning. This biological need to pass on their genetics calls species like snook and tarpon to group together. These large schools are called spawning balls. This behavior greatly increases the chances of hooking into a trophy size specimen for anglers in the know. What a great way to kick off May! Focus your efforts on area passes and beaches. Use your sonar to locate deeper fish. Watch for boiling water and diving birds as these are tell-tale signs of feeding frenzies. Remember, be careful handling these fish. It is inherently important that we all assume total responsibility while enjoying this prime opportunity. Proper revive and release techniques should be implemented. These beauties are in the process of creating trophy fish for future generations during their spawn.

Want some reel adrenaline? Reel Salty Endeavours is a pro guide service that specializes in chasing the monsters that go “THUMP” in the night. I mean, big rods, big bait, and big fish. We are chasing legends here, boys and girls. These slots fill quick so make sure you secure your spot to have your chance at the ultimate fishing story. (Contact info in QR)

May offers many great reasons to get out and enjoy our waters. However, with the sweet comes the sour. As we enter into our rainy season, afternoon thunderstorms can quickly develop on complacent boaters. Thunderstorms can develop quickly with conditions rapidly deteriorating. Dangers of thunderstorms include: gusting winds, damaging hail, heavy downpours, waterspouts, and of course dangerous cloud to ground lightning. The severity of these dangers is amplified in a maritime environment and a carbon graphite rod is a lightning magnet. When available, a mobile weather alert app like “Dark Sky” can help give advanced warning, but always keep an eye on the horizon. STAY SALTY -Capt. Brian Boxx
