New Publishers for Treasure Coast

Treasure Coast residents Gary and Misti Guertin are the new publishers of the Treasure Coast edition of Coastal Angler Magazine. The couple also publishes the Bahamas edition of Coastal Angler Magazine, and has been bringing their love for Florida and the Islands of the Bahamas to the international Coastal Angler audience for nearly two years.

Gary, hailing from Attleboro, Mass., and Cape Cod, was ‘ship-wrecked’ in Florida in the mid ‘70s. As a surfer-lifeguard and credentialed teacher, Gary discovered he could teach school and surf Florida’s warmer waters during the winter months, then return to the Cape as a lifeguard in the summer months. After settling down and marrying his bride Misti over 22 years ago, Gary transferred his teaching and hospitality skills to the marine and resort industry on the Treasure Coast, managing Pirates Cove Resort & Marina for over 11 years, and later at Palm Island Resort in St. Vincent and the Grenadines with Misti. Upon returning to the U.S., Gary joined Altman Development Group, and became the general manager of Harborage Yacht Club & Marina in Stuart.

Florida became Misti’s home in the early ’60s, when her Buckeye parents gave up the Midwest winters for the sunny skies of Florida. Misti grew up fishing and boating on the Loxahatchee River and along Florida’s eastern waterways. Her love of the water led to Bahamian and Caribbean adventures, which she enjoys sharing with her family and friends today. Though Misti’s childhood dream was to become an oceanographer, she found a niche in public relations. After returning from the Caribbean, she left her own practice to lead the Florida office for one of the country’s largest privately owned public relations agencies. Shortly after she and Gary became co-publishers of the Bahamas edition of Coastal Angler Magazine in 2010, Misti reinstated her public relations practice and today continues to serve a select group of clients.

A number of years ago, the term Flahama was coined as an expression of the unique relationships shared between Florida and the Islands of the Bahamas. It was the Guertin’s vision to utilize every means possible to communicate and promote this belief. Through their weekly talk radio show Talkin’ Tourism, now in its fourth year, combined with the opportunity to co-publish the Treasure Coast and Bahamas edition of Coastal Angler Magazine, the vision has taken another giant step.

Gary and Misti reside in Stuart, Fla., with their five Amazon parrots, Abaco, Bacardi, Lola Marie, Tobago and Carmen. They look forward to educating readers on “their” Florida, the Islands of the Bahamas, fishing, boating, environmental and conservation issues and more, which all coastal residents, lovers and visitors need to know to make educated decisions that impact our fragile ecosystems today and tomorrow.
