January’s fishing forecast will be a difficult one to predict this year. Even though several weak cold fronts moved through the area, November and December were warmer than usual. Even by the middle of December seasonably cold weather had yet to arrive on the Treasure Coast. The push of several strong fronts through the area in December will be needed to create what would be considered normal fishing conditions for the month of January.
By the middle of December, a solid sailfish bite had yet to materialize and the dolphin bite which should be slowing was still going strong. Normally blackfin and sailfish should be approaching their seasonal peak come the middle to later part of January. If the cold weather shows or not dolphin, blackfin and sailfish all find ballyhoo irresistible so you can’t go wrong trolling them naked or skirted.
Those looking to catch winter wahoo should focus their efforts during the early morning as the sun breaks over the horizon. High speed trolling for those equipped for the task or pulling dark colored diving plugs, or skirted lures in your spread will offer your best chance for a hookup.
Slow trolling live bait should produce some nice big kingfish this time of year between 60 and 120 feet of water. Snapper, grouper and amberjack should be pretty consistent for those who pursue them on the offshore reefs and ledges. Grouper season is closed in state and federal waters from January 1st until April 30th. All grouper caught should be properly vented and released.
