The Federal snapper season came and went and at least half of it was covered up with wind and rough weather, but those that made it out did report healthy catches of red snapper. In the 80-110 foot range the lane, mangrove and vermillion snapper have been regularly showing up. Amberjack, red and gag grouper are still active around structure and hard bottom areas typically at the 50-70 foot depths. The bait schools are headed back south and any trip can be extremely exciting just chasing the acres and acres of glass minnows being blown up on the surface by mackerel, ladyfish, bluefish and bonitas. They are easily spotted by the bird tornadoes cleaning up the scraps. The trout and redfish bite continues to increase and the water clarity is getting better by the day. Hopefully these patterns will last a while longer before the cold fronts make their way to the Big Bend. Keep those rods bent and be safe!
