Pere Marquette River Fishing Report: January 2016

H ope everyone had a great holiday and Happy New Year! Hard to believe another year has passed on this great river. The Pere Marquette River steelhead fishing has still been spotty. With good rains the end of November and seasonably warmer temperatures in December we saw small pushes of steelhead entering the river. The fish are scattered and covering a lot of water is key. It’s more like hunting this year instead of fishing. With winter here and water temperatures in the fall, anglers should focus on slower pools and runs. Streamers fished slowly with heavier flies and intermediate lines work well this time of year to get the fly down and to give a much slower presentation. For nymphing, try running more natural color eggs in cheese, apricot, and peach. Nymph’s small stoneflies along with hex nymphs can work well.
