Reaching The Family Islands

Reaching The Family Islands
Nassau is not all glitz, casinos, and glamor. There are great bonefishing flats on the south shore of New Providence. Andrew Brooks was pleased with his day on the water with Bonefish Simon Bain.

Contacts, Schedules, And Compromise… Reaching The Family Islands

Travel in the Bahamas can be challenging for anglers seeking the great fishing that abounds throughout the islands. Reaching off-the-beaten-path Out Islands destinations like the Family Island bonefish lodges often requires making connections, late flights, bad weather or lost luggage. But it is not all bad, and it is a lot better than it used to be. An increasing number of airlines offer flights to an ever-increasing number of destinations, and anglers always have the option of chartering a flight.

Several Family Island destinations still, however, require a stop at Nassau, where connections are made on smaller aircraft to smaller airports. Depending on timing, this stop may require a layover. While I used to detest the stop-over, I have grown to appreciate all Nassau has to offer and at times plan a day on New Providence to compromise with non-angling friends or family members.

For those wanting a clean and safe stay-over location close to the airport, the Ocean West Boutique Hotel offers just that. Minutes from the Nassau airport, atop a magnificent hill, the hotel offers spectacular scenery, amenities and a chance for some mid-travel relaxation. The stopover provides time to meet nice locals and fascinating travelers, many who are coming or going to other bonefishing destinations.

If time permits, the hotel offers shuttles to all of Nassau’s attractions including beautiful historical forts and colonial buildings, Bahamian cultural icons like the ever famous Nassau Straw Market or the mega resort attractions of Paradise Island, including Atlantis. Shows, water parks, nightlife, swim with dolphin programs, gambling and a lot more can entertain guests on layovers. Many of these options will please children or non-angling partners, and that is always a good way to start a trip to often-remote bonefishing lodges. If none of these opportunities interest anglers, planning a trip to Nassau can even provide a day of bonefishing with local guide Simon Bain. While many do not attribute Nassau with good bonefishing, there is a good fishery on the south shore and as always, local knowledge is the key to success.

My travels throughout the Bahamas for Ghost Stories research focuses particularly on local knowledge, and I am blessed by my time in the islands, and by the people that I meet. Bahamians are among the most hospitable people, and “island time” is a nice change of pace. I love meeting new guides, learning about their fisheries and working with them to document the history. I am on my way to Exuma, so stay tuned to Coastal Angler Magazine for Exuma updates. And remember, if you have a layover in Nassau, make use of the time. It can be a great addition to any trip!
