Repowering Your Boat (Part II)

[dropcap][/dropcap]Now that you have decided to repower your boat, what’s next?

First, you must decide on what brand of motor you’ll choose. This depends on a few factors: availability of dealer and service in your area, and the quality of the dealer you choose. Remember that motors above 25 HP must be dealer installed to be covered under warranty. You want the installation to be done well and in a timely manner.

If you repower with the same brand of motor, you may be able to use the same controls, harness, and gauges. This is dependent on their condition, age, and if they are compatible with your new motor. Most steering systems will fit any modern motor, but this is a good time to upgrade your steering system. I strongly recommend installing a hydraulic steer- ing system on all motors above 90 HP.

Another factor to consider is what time of year you choose to repower. Most motor companies offer free extended warranties or other offers in the fall, win- ter, and spring which could save you thousands of dollars, especially on larger models (200 HP- 300HP).
