William Lozado, of Augusta, caught this nice 13-pound striper right across the street from my store next to the King Mill intake using a diving Rebel minnow. Try fishing minnows, live worms and jigs near brush that is now in the water in the river and canal. The usual summer pattern of live bait or artificial lures fished slowly in cooler and deeper areas is working well. With the waters almost back to normal, canoe and kayak rentals have picked up at Broadway Tackle. A boat makes it easy to cover larger areas of water and find more fish. People wading the shoal areas of the river are catching some nice smallmouth bass on spinners and crawdad-colored lures. Toss your bait in calm areas behind rocks and see what bites. Nice perch and bream are also being caught in this manner.
