Science Center Calls Out for Volunteers

Fascinated by the Florida’s flora and fauna? Interested in working in marine biology? Enjoy working with visitors, children and school groups? The Ostego Bay Foundation Inc. on San Carlos Island/Ft. Myers Beach is now recruiting adults (18 or older) who are interested in volunteering to help communicate our mission of conservation through education.

A background in marine biology is not required to volunteer, just a passion to help preserve our natural beauty. Many volunteers began with little knowledge of marine biology. As individuals become more familiar with the Ostego Bay Marine Science Center varied and frequent programs, many volunteers take on additional responsibilities, such as conducting research, becoming a doscent or giving talks to community organizations. Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Front Desk – Greet visitors and answer the phones
  • Gift Shop – Merchandise and Organize
  • Center Tour Guides – Showcase our Exhibits
  • Life Sciences – Aquarium Maintenance and Specimen Feeding
  • Members Services – Help Build Foundation Membership
  • Exhibit Curators – Collections Management & Display Development
  • Meet lots of nice residents and tourists from all across the world

Our Volunteer training program represents a serious commitment to our volunteers. We ask a commitment of at least 3 volunteer hours weekly, but the hours are flexible, and the rewards can be tremendous.

Founded in 1991, the mission of the Ostego Bay Foundation, Inc. is to promote the understanding, preservation and enhancement of our unique marine environment through education, research and community involvement. The Marine Science Center, with the help of many volunteers, has earned the Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence in 2017 and is a member of Great Nonprofits. The Foundation provides interactive educational experiences to encourage stewardship of our natural resources.
