September in Southwest Florida wow what a great month to get on the water. The lack of people and the abundance of just about every species of fish makes this one of my all-time favorite months to fish. This month, we are going to highlight our most popular all-around jig head called the Reel Nautical SP Jig Heads. They come in brown, white, red, orange, black, and chartreuse. All the best fish catching colors for all species of fish. The sizes are 1/8, ¼. And 3/8 which covers most of the water columns. Color is of personal preference to the species and body style you are using these heads for. If I am red fishing I will lean toward the orange, brown, red heads with Berkley Gulp typically. If I am snook fishing then I am leaning toward black, white, and chartreuse, with red and black are either species colors. I like Wyze Guys Baby Bambino’s for snook. But these heads with the narrow triple grip will work on any soft bodies and will not split the Gulp style baits. Not excluding other species this time of the year or this particular jig head it is great for all our fish in all our fresh and saltwater.
September is one of those months that you can catch snook literally from the farthest back country creeks to the offshore reefs and wrecks. Find good moving water and bait and you will find the fish. Redfish are typically the same they can be found from the backcountry bays to the passes and on our beaches. It is also a great time of the year to run into them schooling along our coastlines and near gulf bays. Love fishing passes at this time of the year and you can find large schools of reds in our passes congregating for the spawn. If you have side scan sonar it helps with pinpointing where they are laying on the bottom. Then just drop the jig vertically, bounce it and there you go. You got a red or a snook they will be in a lot of the same places. I know this recipe sounds crazy, but it comes from a dear departed friend. Melt some Breyers vanilla bean ice cream as your dredge then coat your filets with crushed corn flakes. Fry them in olive oil with a little butter. Really good for fishlike reds that have a bit stronger flavor. Try it you will like it.
