With the influx of rain and intermittent cold fronts, we decided to take a break from the usual kayak trips and bring it back to our roots with some freshwater pond hopping. We decided to conduct an experiment to see what would cause the best reaction strikes for largemouth bass during the unusually late winter pattern.
One of us took a classic popper chug bug style lure and the other a Texas rigged trusty watermelon plastic creature bait. The results were quite interesting. On days where the wind was causing ripples across the water, the bass crushed the popper without hesitation. Nothing beats watching these big largemouth get air born to attack these lures. On calmer days, the creature bait seemed to do the trick very well.
We did a very slow retrieve to provoke the bass that are sitting on the bottom to strike. They tend to sit down there more often during the colder periods. This made the creature the better selection to stir up the fish’s appetite.
In conclusion, just because it’s too windy to get on a kayak or boat does not mean you can’t get outside and catch some pigs. So, turn off your TV, grab your rod and your kiddo and get out to your neighborhood pond. You won’t catch fish from your couch! Good vibes and tight lines always!
