Skinny Water Report By: Derick Burgos

Spring is in the air and it is getting hot. Time to dust off your paddle and gear and get on the water.  Trout, reds, snook, jacks, snapper, sheepshead and even cobia are going to be in abundance this time of the year. We all know that the inshore skinny water areas are where our favorite trophies reside.

With the water temperatures rising, there will be lots of movement and lots of feeding. This always yields a variety of species that you’re able to catch.  Snook are going to be feeding aggressively right now, and this is the perfect time to land yourself a big girl! Always remember to utilize your lures accordingly, adjusting to the water clarity, tide and bait fish that are swimming around. Even crustaceans and certain critters are in an abundance for live bait when fishing for snapper and sheepshead.

Your big trophy snook can be around any mangrove corner. So, make sure when the tide is high to throw far into the mangroves to entice that reaction strike. Topwater lures are always ideal to throw in this situation. However, jig heads and soft plastics are also great lures to choose to catch a hungry snook.  So, grab your tackle box and get into your kayak, because you can’t catch yourself a pig unless you get out there and fish hard.
