Skinny Water Report By: Derick Burgos & Natalie Manrique

These past days and events are certainly unprecedented for us all. Thankfully for us, fishing was exhibited in writing as a form of “exercise” defined by our Governor. This certainly is a relief for us, because taking care of our mental health and physical health is imperative with our “new normal” lifestyle. Fishing and kayak fishing is definitely a perfect way to practice social distancing and getting outside and having fun.

The transition period is in full swing for many species of fish including redfish, kingfish, tarpon and grouper–making for an abundance of our favorite species to target in our relatively shallow bay. Find cuts, flow zones, and even the flats, and you will have an opportunity to catch a multitude of species—including some big ones! Don’t forget, always observe your water clarity, which has been relatively clear on the flats and somewhat clearer in usually murky backwaters. Use your lures and/or bait accordingly.

White bait has been the trick for us when jigging soft plastics. So, live bait folks use accordingly as well! Don’t forget your topwater lures when you see the fish smashing the bait on top. You will nearly always get a big, greedy fish to strike.

Hopefully, this is over by the time this is published. However, we hope that everyone stays safe, keeps 50 feet away from other boats. Launch your kayaks and find that super skinny water where our tailing reds love to dance! Good vibes and tight lines always from your friends, Natalie and Derick of Pure Florida Watersports.
