Sportfishing Fishing Report: Dec 2013

by Capt. Adam Reckert

The sportfishing this month is going off the scale. Dolphin are biting very close in on the reef in only 100 feet of water. We usually have to trek far offshore to find the dolphin, but lately we’re catching the big dolphin just a mile offshore. The dolphin have been nice sizes, most between 10 and 20 pounds. We’re catching them by either trolling ballyhoo and artificial lures, or by live baiting with kites. Trolling has also been very effective lately for big wahoo. This week (November 18), several wahoo over 50 pounds have been caught on the troll. Wahoo like faster moving baits and will usually eat the deepest running bait first. We’re catching wahoo on double hooked ballyhoo with a blue/white or red/black Islander lure in front of it, pulled behind a 3 pound high speed trolling lead. Troll something like that at 10 knots or more and you have excellent chances at wahoo this time of year.

With the cooler weather moving through, the sailfish bite has been off the chain. December is one of the best months of the year for sailfish here in Ft Lauderdale. Many of our trips recently have caught multiple sailfish, our best trip lately being 10 sailfish caught and released in a single day. If there is enough wind to fish using the kites, kite fishing is the ultimate fishing technique to catch sailfish. Watching the sailfish attack a kite bait suspended from the kite is a pure adrenaline rush. Many times when kite fishing, we’ll get a pod of sailfish moving through and catch 3 or 4 all at once. There isn’t any thrill in the world to match being hooked up to 3 sailfish simultaneously. While kite fishing, we’re also catching some mahi-mahi, bigger kingfish and a few blackfin tuna. We’re having some great fishing out of Ft Lauderdale this month. Good luck to everyone out there fishing this month. Tight lines and good fishing.
