Happy birthday America! As if the fireworks on the Fourth weren’t exciting enough, July is a great month to get out on the water off the Treasure Coast. Tarpon, permit, snook and jacks cruise the beaches and are able to be sight casted too; if you’re able to see them. A good pair of Costa Del Mar sunglasses with the 580 lenses are perfect to cut the glare of the intense South Florida sun for this style of fishing, trolling or live baiting. Artificials, various live baits and even fly fishing can work well on these fish. Offshore, the reef is alive in the summer months. Bottom fishing for mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, grouper and cobia along the Six and Eight Mile Reefs and nearshore wrecks is time well spent in July, as is live baiting or trolling for kingfish, blackfin tuna, dolphin, and sailfish. Calm weather in July also allows you to get out in the deep and look around a little easier. Keep an eye out for weed lines, color changes, rips, and pieces of float. Schools of ferocious peanut dolphin are common now, so smaller rods with cut bait and some chunks of squid can go a long way when you find something floating out there. If you have a good radar, a run and gun method is also a great option this time a year. Yellowfin tuna are still running on the east side of the stream and in the Bahamas, and for the grand finale, I would definitely recommend the daytime swordfish trip. July is one of my favorite months for these amazing creatures of the deep. In my opinion there’s nothing more exciting off Florida’s East Coast than getting tight on one of these highly sought after gladiators. However, you decide to spend your July, I hope it’s safe and Off The Chain.
