Topsail/ Surf City Fishing Report: May 2014

Wahooooo! May is here and so are the wahoo. The Stream should be on fire with these magnificent speedy creatures. High speed trolling has been doing well for these beasts as our technology for this type of fishing has progressed. Have a large topwater bait at the ready for those schools of blackfin that will be popping up here and there for some awesome offshore top water action. The bonita should show up within four miles around the middle of this month. Divers Rock N34 29.420 W77 16.370 X N34 28.284 W77 16.108 is always a good area to start looking. Have some Diamond Jigs, Colt Snipe Jigs and Gotcha plugs handy. At the end of the month, the big Spanish should start showing up as well. The piers will start catching good numbers of blues, as well as some large Spanish by the end of the month. We should see a spring run of spots off the piers as well. The red drum will be in the surf and May is usually a great month for sea mullet in the surf, too. The big blues should be making their way through here and can not resist a live mullet dangled in front of them (don’t forget the wire). Inshore, the specks will begin to slow down a little but the red drum should begin to school up really tight and be easy to find.
