Venice Inshore Fishing Report: March 2014

[dropcap]Y[/dropcap]ou hear it every year. March…..the transition month. The time of year when trout make their way into the bays and beaches to spawn. The Miss. River is at 7.8 ft and with the large amount of snow up north we expect to have very high river this year.

You can still catch plenty of redfish. Blind Bay, Redfish Bay, Garden Isle Bay, and South Pass are some areas that you want to target. I like to start out fishing points where the water is coming out of a canal. I usually start out 50-75 yards away from the point and fish my way to the canes. The marsh is constantly eroding away and the stubble under the water usually holds baitfish therefore reds. The water is always changing. You might have to make several moves in order to find clean water. Also check your prop wash. Fresh water sits on top and you might have clean water underneath. A poppin’ cork usually works the best with gulp or dark plastic tipped with shrimp.

You can still catch trout, they are just not as plentiful and consistent as they are in the later months. Blind Bay and South Pass are your best bet. Trout will be moving in to the beaches to spawn. You will also want to use live shrimp under a cork or Carolina rigged. We have also had a lot of success with the voodoo shrimp as well.
