With rain falling on Friday morning and a looming cold front approaching the weekend, the Florida Flatsfishing Association was able to kick-off its first event for the 2013 season, thanks to a pause from Mother Nature. Thirty-two and a half teams registered for the event, with a couple half- teams being from the new single angler teams that have been permitted once again to participate in the circuit.
The projected cold front held off long enough for the anglers to weigh-in at either Sebastian Inlet Marina in Micco or the Riverside Café in Vero Beach from 12 noon until the 3:00 p.m. cutoff. Here are the winners from the first FLFA event:
- 1st Place – Trout – Ian and Bill Macpherson of Fort Pierce – 8.37 lbs. for $500.
- 1st Place – Redfish – Robert Rohmann and Peter Deeks from Merritt Island – 7.74 lbs. for $500. 2nd Place – Trout – Jonathan Turner and Andrew Palau from Vero Beach – 6.80 lbs. for $200
- 2nd Place – Redfish – Tim and Mike Strange from Melbourne – 6.77 lbs. for $200
- 3rd Place – Trout – Tim and Mike Strange from Melbourne – 6.43 lbs. for $100
- 3rd Place – Redfish – Josh Rhein and Rob Reilly from Sebastian – 6.54 lbs. for $100
The 2-Fish Slam was won by Tim and Mike Strange with a combined total of 13.20 lbs. good for $400.
The RCI Optics Big Fish winner was Ian Macpherson with his 8.37 lbs. trout, good for a pair of RCI Optics.
