There is no question that the Islands of the Bahamas “heat up” in the summer months. The water temperature, which will be in the mid-eighties on the shallowest flats, affects the behavior of all marine life that inhabit these near-shore environments.

As predictable as the tides, bonefish will seek cooler water during the heat of the day. Mid-summer flats fishing calls for early morning and early evening excursions. The water temperature will also be affected by the stage of the tide. With the rising tide, the water will be cooler, so to plan your best shot, factor in the tide cycle along with the time of day. If you know the island, or fish with a professional guide, there are bonefish to be found on the north and west sides of North Bimini in cooler ocean water. When fishing the warmer water, be prepared to go deeper with your baits. Holes and channel drop-offs will be holding fish. Your weighted fly or natural bait must still drop through the water column in a natural fashion. One advantage to August fishing is that the winds will tend to be calm most of the time. This helps increase the clarity of the water, a definite plus for the flats enthusiast. Summer is here and the fishing will be hot, hot, hot in Bimini.
