[dropcap]L[/dropcap]et’s hope the weather in November is as great as it was in October. The diving conditions were spectacular, with many calm days producing pristine diving conditions.
With fall in the air, water temperatures will drop a degree or two by the end of the month. Average air temperature ranges from 71° to 81°F with an average water temperature of 79°F. Might as well pull the wetsuit out and get ready for chilly-water diving.
As the month progresses, we turn our attention to the north in anticipation of the first nor’easter tracking its way south. As long as these cold fronts stay north of 27N, we are spared their blustery winds and choppy seas. Otherwise, the sea state should be more than two feet, which translates to excellent diving and visibility with little or no current. Even if a front does blow through, it is gone within a day or two and conditions return to normal. During this time, we take advantage of diving the inland blue holes and drift diving at dive sites accessible by land transportation.
Daylight saving time ends at 2:00 am on Sunday, November 2, so remember to turn your clocks back an hour. Should you forget, the downside here is that you will arrive for work an hour early; the upside is that you will not miss the dive boat.
The full moon occurs on Thursday, November 6 at 5:23 p.m. It is commonly known as the Beaver Moon, Hunter’s Moon and Frosty Moon. None of these sound tropical—we need more choices!
The DEMA diving tradeshow is being held in Las Vegas this year. It begins on Wednesday, November 19 and ends on Saturday, November 22. We, like many other dive operators from the Bahamas and around the world, will be attending, but we will return to Abaco after the show ends to accommodate guests visiting during American Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26. Tourism is highest during this week, so if you are planning to cook your turkey in Abaco and do some diving as well, we recommend emailing or phoning in advance to make reservations. Remember to take advantage of the discounts included in hotel/dive packages. The hotels, restaurants and other businesses that have been closed for staff vacations and annual maintenance have reopened and we are all looking forward to seeing you.
