[dropcap]I[/dropcap]s it fall yet? We have spent the month of September getting acclimated to a fairly regular pattern of morning tropical rains followed by afternoon humidity and sunshine. What has been unseasonal are several days of northwest breezes. Over the next two months, the water will be cooling and mutton snappers are starting to invade the shallower waters. Bonefish numbers have been steady with a recent half day charter releasing four bonefish to 8-pounds last week.
The inshore trolling has been very productive on days we have fished, with catches varying from mutton snappers to groupers and large jacks, as well as Barry the barracuda. We have been trolling with 20-pound, 30-pound and 50-pound tackle and pulling small Rapala-style lures, but most of our successful hookups are coming on a ballyhoo and skirt combination trolled at about six knots with red and black being the favorite color as summer winds down. On the flats this month we are still targeting bonefish and permit with 10-pound. spinning gear and 9-weight fly rods. We have been using various shrimp and crab imitation flies for the bones.
