It’s that time of year again!!! Tarpon Time! Every year we all look forward to tarpon season like it’s a Christmas eve and we are little kids waiting to open up that one present that we’ve been wanting for so long. I literally get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about them now. Tarpon are one of the most incredible species of fish on planet earth. They will humble and earn the respect of any angler no matter the size of the fish. Their line burning runs and acrobatic jumps are enough to get anyone’s blood rushing through their veins! But, this I where the break down happens when many battles are lost leaving you with your tail between your legs. Once you’ve learned the techniques and get the correct tackle it will help up your chances for success. Even then, I promise you won’t always win. The one that got away… is what keeps us coming back for more of this spectacular fish! There are two types of tarpon but the one we have common in our gulf waters is the Megalops Atlanticus also called the “Silver King”. These beautifully silvered colored fish can reach lengths of 8ft. and can weigh in at around 280 pounds. They can be found in both fresh and saltwater but thrive better where waters connect to both. Tarpon spend most of their juvenile years in fresh/ brackish waters and then as they become adults they will move out to saltwater for breeding purposes and to live out their lives. The way their swim bladder is designed, they are one of the few fish species that can come to the surface and gulp air for short burst of energy. This is also a dead giveaway tarpon are in the area when you see them surfacing to gulp air. No matter the size, tarpon will always put on a show! Also, they most definitely test your tackle so make sure you are ready. Have fun and be safe everyone! Tight lines and Tight knots to everyone!
