Crystal River

Crystal River: September Fishing Report

Hey there, my name is Capt. James Kerr, and I’m excited to write the Crystal River forecast for Coastal Angler.  I’ve been guiding for almost two years, and have fished my whole life.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love to fish for redfish, and to target big fish.

Redfish: The bite has been great and will continue. The bigger fish have been here and will continue to move in. Freelined pinfish have produced bigger fish. Also, a 1/16 or 1/8 jig tipped with shrimp, will also have great results. I find the first 1/3 of the incoming tide to be the best.  Mirriodines and DOA jerkbaits are great choice for artificial. When I’m targeting redfish, all I do is chase mullet in creeks and islands.

Trout: As we get closer to fall and the cooler months, the bite will improve.  I have had success going to deeper water that has structure, or deeper rock grass. We have been throwing 1/16 or 1/8 jig with lil johns. I prefer the 1/16, even in deeper water (6 to12 feet) for a slower presentation. The water has been warm, and the fish are deep.  Fishing for the shallow trout, we have been getting a few in the early morning or later in the evenings. The bait of choice has been DOA Jerk Baits.

Snook: First of all, snook is open in our region and they are everywhere.  I like to target mangroves with good moving water, or just off islands with deeper holes. When I target snook, I like an artificial bait with a fast presentation, preferably anything that stays on the surface or right under the surface. Look for good moving water, and areas that hold bait. If I’m using live bait, I prefer big pinfish. Mirrorsdines are a good choice along with DOA Jerkbaits.

Snook limit is one person, with a slot of 28 to 33 inches.

Tight lines and fish hard. 🇺🇸
