April, had some very good fishing days, I’m looking to fishing in May! May is the one of the finer months to fish the Mosquito Lagoon. The water levels are steadily rising, as well as the water temperatures. Redfish and trout are moving into their early summer patterns. Slot-sized redfish and the jumbo reds will be tailing early. Spotted sea trout will be shallow, ambushing baitfish. Black drum are feeding on the flats.
The lagoon is starting to heat up, this brings the baitfish. Redfish and trout both feed heavily on baitfish, especially early morning, and that’s when you’ll see the feeding action if you’re quiet and lucky. There are many ways to take advantage of this top-water action. Surface lures excel at first light. Have a top-water lure rigged when you leave the dock. For fly fishers an unweighted baitfish pattern or a floater/gurgler or popper with a 12’ leader puts you in the game. Of course you can always net some finger mullet, let them swim on a large kahle hook if you like to to kick back while you fish. Whichever technique you use, a stealthy approach is essential.
Enjoy the outdoors, get out and fish!
