The past month has been a strong one for anglers fishing with Pale Horse Fishing Charters, with steady offshore action and a mixed inshore bite keeping rods bent across Southwest Florida. Summer patterns have lined up well, with snapper and grouper holding on the nearshore wrecks and reefs, while the backcountry has continued to produce snook, mangrove snapper, redfish, and trout.
Offshore fishing has been the headline lately, especially on the nearshore wrecks and reefs where quality snapper, porgies, and grouper have been feeding consistently. This time of year, also lines up with Florida’s summer goliath grouper spawning period, when these fish gather around wrecks, rock ledges, and patch reefs during July, August, and September. That seasonal movement has made for some unforgettable battles with big goliaths pushing in closer and fish reaching the 300-pound class giving anglers the kind of tug they do not forget anytime soon!
Back in the shallows, the bite has stayed solid and well-rounded. Mangrove snapper have been chewing well in the backwater, and the snook bite has also been productive around the usual summertime zones. Mixed in with that action, redfish and spotted seatrout have added to the variety, giving anglers a good shot at putting together a true Southwest Florida inshore slam on the right tide.
Summer in Southwest Florida brings excellent fishing opportunities, but it also demands close attention to the weather. Our region’s rainy season runs from mid-May into mid-October, and Florida is known for frequent summer thunderstorms driven by heat, humidity, and sea-breeze collisions. Those storms can build fast, bringing lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rain, so the smart move is to plan around an early start, fish hard through the morning, and work toward getting back in by late afternoon before the daily storm cycle ramps up. Around this time of year, it is common for that weather window to tighten quickly, so being prepared and staying ahead of the forecast is a big part of a safe and successful trip.
As the season begins to edge toward fall, there is plenty to be excited about! Cobia and tripletail are both well-known Gulf Coast targets that show along markers, buoys, and nearshore structure, and cobia should remain in Gulf waters into the fall while tripletail become a key target seasonally along the Florida coast.
