October is by far my favorite month of the year to do what I do. Redfish, snook, tarpon, all the big fish come to play! With the mullet run starting a little early this year I still feel that in October things are going to just get better!

Tide swings will be the key to your success, I’ve mentioned many times that I like the high swing to outgoing the best especially if you can time your fishing trip for one of these swings in early morning or just before dark. Baits on the bottom under trolling motor or anchor and drifting usually produces the best bite. Live mullet, live croakers, live pin fish will be my 3 main baits when targeting redfish and snook. I like to use 40 lb fluorocarbon leader and 3/0 or 4/0 circle hooks with just enough lead to touch the bottom. If you’re marking fish and not getting a bite you can always try blue crab or cut mullet.

The tarpon will be thick both in the current of the inlet and the north side of the jetty and along the beach. I have been messing around with different techniques on tarpon including slow trolling live mullet and butterflying fresh mullet on the bottom and both have produced some amazing hookups. However throwing big swim baits in feeding fish is always an exciting way to get hooked into one of these trophy fish.

The weather is cooling off and it’s a great time of the year to fish so get out there! As always if you see us on the water say hello!
