Abaco Offshore Forecast – January 2012

Like clockwork, you can tell January has arrived by the abundance of big wahoo in the Abacos. As was the case last year, the migration started in November and December with smaller fish and the larger fish showed in January. So, what do you need to do to get your share of big ‘hoo? First, gear-up. Use 50 pound class tackle. You will need a strong backing and leader. Whether you use natural baits or lures will be primarily determined by your trolling speed, which of course depends on sea conditions. Recommended speed is between 10 and 14 knots. Darker colored skirts, such as black and red, seem preferred. Until you locate where the fish are lurking, you will want to run your baits at various depths between 150 and 300 feet of water. In South Abaco, the areas around Hole-In The-Wall and Cherokee Pocket should be very productive and provide a great day offshore. The cooler water will bring in more dolphin but they will not be trophies. Although they will be on the smaller size, they’ll be just right for the table. For an added surprise, a blue or white marlin or a sailfish could also show up in the mix. If fishing the reefs, you should be able to snag a couple of amberjack, snapper and grouper.
