[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ay was a windy month, but the fishing was pretty good, now June brings those glassy calm mornings in the lagoon. I’m ready for that! It’s a great time to fish for redfish and trout on the grass flats and or the deeper areas. Redfish tailing on the flats will be easy to see, but will need an extremely stealthy approach to catch. Long casts with an unweighted shrimp or soft plastic does the trick. Fly fishers need to cast with a minimum of false casts and with little movement in the skiff. Waders, if they don’t mind walking the soft bottom can get close to tailing reds up on the flats too.
Live shrimp with any size will be hard to come by. Summer live baits include pigfish, pinfish and finger mullet. Pigfish are the top bait for trout this time of year. With audible grunts and and a subtle flash they are easy for trout to find as long as you keep them from swimming into the grasses. June is a great month for trout and most drop offs surrounding the shallow flats will have them.
If bait is not your thing for trout, cast top- water lures in the early AM and switch to weighted soft plastics mid-morning and you should get hooked up.Stay hydrated, use sunscreen and wear polarized glasses for a comfortable day on the water, summer is here. Enjoy the outdoors, go fishing!
