Bahamas Surf Forecast – April 2012

We all know April showers bring May flowers. Well, let’s just hope April swells bring waves. Our bigger, winter swells tend to ease off this month as we enjoy a transitional month, with swell heights not usually topping 5 to 6 feet.

Air and water begin warming and yes, there might be some rain, but no summer doldrums just yet; far from it. April can be super fun with lighter winds than last month. Keep a thicker, wider board handy to maximize the days you can surf, as there’ll be quite a few days in the 2 to 4 foot range. Surfers should target breaks that work well on smaller north to east swells. And who knows? It is a transitional month, so don’t be at all surprised to catch a big (6 foot-plus) swell this month. No wetsuit required this month either. In the Northern Bahamas we were already seeing water temperatures in the upper 70’s by mid-March.

The island of Eleuthera hosts the “Jammin’ for Nature” Earth Day Concert April 22. The Nature Conservancy is partnering with local groups to host this event, and according to organizers is helping to “brand the island of Eleuthera as a destination in scale with nature.”
