Surfers in Eleuthera are hoping for a swell-filled, less blustery month in April. March, unfortunately, was plagued by lots of wind and just a few clean days. April should offer something for every surfer as the winter swell pattern transitions into the summer pattern. Most swells will come from the east, versus the northeast, averaging in the 3-to-6 foot range with occasional bigger days. Big wave enthusiasts may encounter some giant days when the jet stream shifts over the southern U.S. bringing swell producing systems closer to the Bahamas.
Typical winter spots like Hatchet Bay, and Holiday Beach will still break on a number of days during April. Where the “transition” comes in is that it is time to break out the longboard, funboard or fish and have real fun in the sun. Air temperatures will begin to have a summer feel and water temperature is warming up quickly as well. Expect water temperatures hovering around 80 degrees, so leave those wetsuits home.
