Abaco Dive Forecast – July 2011

While Abaco is commonly marketed as the “sailing capital of the Bahamas,” it also offers some of the most diverse diving in the Bahamas, and even in the world, according to the feedback we receive from our guests.

Visibility in July averages 100-plus feet. One exciting impairment to visibility are the glassy (copper) sweepers and silversides filling the tunnels, swim-throughs and caverns along one of the world’s longest barrier reefs. Often you can feel their noses tapping against your body as you dive amongst clouds of these little critters. Ocean current is virtually non-existent and wind is light, except during the occasional summer thunderstorm, which normally passes as quickly as it arrives. Air temperature ranges from 75-to-87 degrees F and water temperature is averaging 85 degrees F.

July 15th is the “Full Buck Moon,” so named because it is the month buck deer start growing antlers. It is also called the “Full Thunder Moon” due to the abundance of thunderstorms in July. Regardless of its name, night diving by the light of a full moon is a dive you should experience during your visit, especially with the glow from the bioluminescence in the water. With the diverse reef system and mountainous coral rising to the surface in many locations, both divers and snorkelers can share the same vessel. No need for family and friends to be separated by differing levels of ability.

So for a great dive adventure you may want to consider “Layin’ Low in Abaco” as Barefoot Man says.
