Inshore
During September, the water on the flats is about as hot as it gets and that means that the bonefish are definitely staying deep during the heat of the day. On an early morning tide, before the sun gets too high, the fish will be out stalking their prey. Similarly, on a rising evening tide you will have the best shot at teasing a bonefish or two…or three…or four. The sun is still very strong so make sure that you are well protected, glasses, hat and lots of sun screen.
Offshore
The white marlin and sailfish bite in September are consistent and as always just plain old fun. You can really get your adrenalin going with these acrobatic specialists. The mutton snapper will school again along the walls in September but as one would expect with migratory fish, they are now heading in the opposite direction that they were heading in the early summer. My favorite fishing in September is to target hogfish. It is spearfishing, not rod and reel fishing, but the air is nice and warm, and I can spend all day in the water stalking some nice hogs. It is a Bahamian thing! The bull sharks have moved further north, due to the water temperatures, so there is little chance of ever even seeing one this month. What does this mean? It means you can take your time hauling a nice fish out from under a rock, without having to worry too much about a toothy creature looking over your shoulder. Get out there and snag some fish this month, and try to stay cool.
