Not many anglers have ventured to the Lower Bahamas since the destruction that occurred as a result of Hurricane Irene. All of the lower islands experienced some devastation with Acklins, Rum and Cat Islands receiving the most severe damage. However, the recovery is moving forward at a steady pace. With the storm season beyond the halfway point for the year, boaters should find opportunities as the water cools to enjoy some excellent fishing in San Salvador and Cat Island.
A couple of resident anglers have reported that the wahoo bite has been excellent for this time of year. This is also a favorite time to troll for blue marlin between San Salvador and Rum Cay. Those targeting blue marlin should see multiple fish well into the fall season. The bite just keeps getting better for yellow-eyes and grouper if you are deep dropping for dinner. Some marina facilities were compromised during Irene so be sure to call ahead for dockage availability.
