Bimini Inshore Fishing Forecast – December 2011

Year round, Bimini is recognized as one of the top inshore fishing destinations. The fact is each season simply brings new challenges and opportunities to the inshore angler and bonefishing enthusiast. With the water and air temperature dropping significantly, due to the increased power of the cold fronts moving off of the southeast U.S. and the shortness of the day, fish schooling patterns change. The fishing has been absolutely great and will continue into December. The cooler water will result in smaller schools of larger fish, typically in the 8 to 11 pound range. Also, the fish will not be retreating to the deeper water during the day as they do in the late summer and early autumn. My preferred tide to fish is the incoming.

There will definitely be more wind to contend with so the ability to cast at all angles into the wind is important. If the wind is very strong, seek out the lee side of a mangrove outcropping or other protected location. Natural baits, including crab and shrimp, should work best. On the near shore reefs and ledges, grouper and snapper are plentiful and can add some tasty fare for the dinner table. December should prove to be excellent for the inshore and near shore enthusiast to enjoy all that Bimini has to offer, both on the water and on the island!
