March really starts off the great spring and summer fishing here in Bimini. As the winter weather hopefully calms down, we will start to see the billfish bite turn on. The wahoo will still be around in good numbers, and will remain that way through the end of the month. We are already seeing sailfish in good numbers when pulling small ballyhoo rigged with a featherweight skirt on light fluorocarbon leaders. A blue marlin was also caught the last week of February out of Bimini in 1,200 feet of water.
With that being said, for those targeting marlin, troll depths from 600 to 1200 feet for the best results, using either ballyhoo or your choice of artificials; I recommend using ballyhoo for those targeting a mixed bag of table fare and billfish. The mahi-mahi are also showing up in shallower depths, and will be caught using skirted ballyhoo. As always, here in Bimini, your electric reels will definitely get a workout in the 750 to 1200 foot depth range doing a little deep-dropping for yellow eye and queen snapper. March really is a great time to come to Bimini for a true mixed bag of everything an offshore angler could ask for.
