Grand Bahama Offshore Fishing Forecast – May 2012

We have caught lots of dolphin trolling the edge north of West End, Grand Bahama, in 300 to 600 feet of water.

The month of April has been all about dolphin. During the month we had many days with strong northeast winds, which provided for only a few “great weather” days of fishing. However, with the few days we had, the dolphin bite was fantastic. We have caught lots of dolphin trolling the edge north of West End, Grand Bahama, in 300 to 600 feet of water. Water temperature has been in the mid 70’s. We have done well with rigged ballyhoo with blue/black skirts. There has been very little or no weeds, but we have seen a lot of frigate birds, and nine times out of ten we have caught 15 to 25 pound dolphin under them. The blackfin tuna bite has been just as good, but we have been finding them more south of West End.

With the month of May and summer coming, we should see the winds die down, providing more “fishable” days. The dolphin bite should continue to be strong and there should be plenty of tuna action, particularly yellowfin. Bottom fishing will also remain strong. Toward the end of May blue marlin will also begin to show up in larger numbers.

May is the start of the Bahamas summer boating season, and we are looking forward to welcoming you to Old Bahama Bay.
