Nassau Offshore Forecast – October 2012

Heather Oblaczynski and Jamie Hayes on the docks of Nassau Yacht Haven with nice set of tuna captured fishing offshore of Nassau, Bahamas while fishing aboard Fish Head with Capt. Teddy Pratt. (Heather is the daughter of Misti & Gary Guertin, copublishers of the Treasure Coast and Bahamas editions of Coastal Angler Magazine).

Although the offshore fishing has slowed down, the bottom and light tackle fishing makes up for this. Some small wahoo, mahi-mahi and some tuna have been caught trolling The Ledge but it has been “spotty”. Fishing for the smaller reef fish can be a lot of fun even for “grown-ups” as there is always some action off the bottom. Squid and any type of cut bait that can hold up on the hook while the fish pick at it till they are hooked or the angler is out smarted by the fish will work. Chumming is a great way to get the fish behind the boat to get them in a feeding frenzy especially yellowtail snappers. You can troll for them also around the reefs. Fishing on the bottom can produce many different species of fish including grouper, trigger fish and more. Light spinning tackle makes this type of fishing a lot of fun even using a hand line island style can be a blast.

Looking toward October, we expect to see an increase in the wahoo bite as well as more mahi-mahi showing up.

Nassau has lots to offer so come and visit, we fish all year round!  Tight lines everybody!!!!!
