April is upon us, and as the air and sea temperatures continue to rise so do the number of divers and snorkelers. This is a good time to locate your ‘C’ card and make sure your passport is still valid.

Warm daily temperatures are moderated at night by cool breezes off the ocean. Air temperatures range from 81 degrees during the day to 69 degrees at night, average water temperature is 78 degrees and there is a relatively low chance of precipitation. Visibility generally exceeds 100 plus feet, and there is little, if any, current. The cold fronts of winter (this one was nearly non-existent) are generally over by now. Daylight Savings Time increases the daylight portion of the day and allows for more dive opportunities.

Many well-traveled divers have told us that Abaco offers some of the best diving in the world. The diversity of diving along the world’s third longest barrier reef is very apparent during April and May. The crystal clear waters are teeming with fish, and the coral reefs are alive with marine life. It is mating season for many fish and crawfish (lobster), and you may even catch a glimpse of a manta ray or two on their migration north.

The April full moon is known at the ‘Pink Moon’, supposedly because the wild pink ground phlox is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. The moon occurs on April 6th at 3:19 p.m., and, as always, it’s an excellent time for night diving. This is a great weekend to consider visiting; begin your visit diving under the light of the moon and end it by celebrating Easter on April 8th. We look forward to seeing you soon!
