A New Year is upon us and here’s hoping the holidays were happy and memorable for you!

As we start off the new year in Abaco, daily air temperatures in January range from a comfortable 66 degrees at night to a balmy 77 degrees during the day. Water temperature averages a lovely 73 degrees. Only a light wetsuit is necessary. Monday, January 9, 2:30 a.m., will bring us the Full ‘Wolf’ Moon, sometimes referred to as the Full ‘Snow’ Moon. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the name of January’s moon results from hungry wolf packs howling outside Indian villages amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter. This would be a great time to plan a night dive. On good weather days, the seas are relatively calm with little or no current and visibility is typically outstanding. Sharks, spotted eagle rays and turtles are frequently seen cruising around the reef. Nassau grouper also spawn in January, always around the time of the full moon, and always in the same locations. This has made them easy targets for fishermen, so the Government of the Bahamas, concerned about the depletion of the species, has been proactive in ensuring their survival. Remember, the Department of Marine Resources has closed Nassau grouper season from December 1, 2011 through February 29, 2012. The taking, landing, processing and possessing of Nassau grouper is strictly prohibited during these dates.

Start the year off right with a visit to the Abacos!
