School is out and summer has arrived, the perfect time for friends and families to visit Abaco. Whether diving or snorkeling, a day in the water together results in lots of happy faces, laughter, smiles, stories, relaxed parents and tired children. With Abaco’s diverse reef system, where coral nearly reaches the surface in many locations, both scuba divers and snorkelers can share the same vessel and enjoy the same sites. No need for family and friends to be separated by different levels of ability or different water activities. Although the dominant easterly breeze and scattered afternoon showers bring some relief to summer’s heat and humidity, it feels best to spend the sunny days in, on or under the water. Water temperature has warmed to a delightful 80- plus degrees. Shorty wetsuits are only needed for those who tend to chill easy. Ocean current is virtually non-existent and visibility is well, endless. The reefs along the island are teeming with an assorted array of fish ranging from small, brightly colored tropicals to groupers and snappers to reef sharks and everything in between. Large schools of blue tang congregate above the reef, while summer’s always spectacular silversides are back in force and populate the swim throughs and caverns in mass. We’re also seeing a lot of turtles, both hawksbill and green, which is always a thrill. On night dives, the glow from the bioluminescence in the water is magical.
For a great summer escape, come visit Abaco—we’ll leave the light on!
