[dropcap]M[/dropcap]arch + Spring = Spring Break—and Easter this year, Abaco is the ideal place to enjoy it. The logistics are easy, only one hour from West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami and 90 minutes from Orlando and New Smyrna Beach. Literally a hop, skip and jump! As we move into March we enjoy a noticeable warming trend in air and water temperatures along with generally calm seas and amazing visibility. Why not consider a night dive under the light of the Full ‘Worm’ Moon on Wednesday, March 27th, or a morning dive on Easter Sunday, March 31? Advance reservations are required.
The reefs are alive and well with healthy hard and soft corals, and fish populations including grouper, snapper, angelfish and parrotfish. A typical dive may include sightings of eagle rays, southern sting rays, Caribbean reef sharks, turtles and moray eels. The angle of the sunlight enhances the colors on the coral heads along the reef, and provides the perfect location to observe the abundant variety of juvenile tropical fish.
If you’re not a certified SCUBA diver, but are interested in pursuing the sport, March is an ideal time to sign up for a resort/Discover SCUBA Diving lesson. The lesson provides an opportunity to try SCUBA diving to see if it is for you. It only takes a couple of hours in the swimming pool to be introduced to the basic principles of diving and, better yet, the lesson includes equipment and a dive trip. If diving is not your thing, the coral reefs of Abaco nearly reach the surface in a number of locations and offer equal enjoyment for snorkelers at the top as divers enjoy diving at the base.
Get a head start on diving this year by visiting Abaco in March. It will leave ample time for a return visit this summer.
