Abaco Dive Forecast – October 2012

As we write this report, Mother Nature has been kind to Abaco this hurricane season. According to statistics communicated by weather forecasters, we are officially over the ‘hump’ of the season. Let’s just hope Mother Nature listens to the Weather Channel.

Two thousand and twelve has been a typical, tropical summer – hot and humid days with afternoon thunderstorms. Fortunately, we get to spend a good part of the time underwater. Diving has been particularly outstanding with incredible visibility and calm seas. Our guests continue to be amazed at the diversity and abundance of marine life – from moray eels peeking out from the security of the coral to brightly colored tropical fish scurrying around the reef to spotted eagle rays, sharks and turtles. Many of these divers have traveled around the world and, when informed, voice their appreciation that the Government of the Bahamas has been proactive in establishing National Underwater Parks to protect these natural treasures for generations to come.

October is considered the ‘off season’ in The Abacos. Numerous hotels, restaurants and dive operations are currently closed for annual maintenance and staff vacations with re-openings scheduled for the end of October. If you are planning to visit this month, it is recommended you make reservations in advance to ensure businesses are open and services can be provided.

As the month progresses, slight temperature changes can be expected making the clarity and colors on the reef even more brilliant. By the end of the month, the focus will shift from the tropics to points north awaiting the first nor’easter. This change in weather patterns will signal the change in diving seasons from summer to winter. We look forward to seeing you ‘on island’ soon.
