Abaco Flats Fishing Forecast – October 2012

The water temperature in October starts to cool off a bit, so you will see more schools of smaller fish going back up into the creeks. These fish are easier to catch because they are smaller 1 to 3 pounders. Out on the flats that are closer to deep water, you will still see the schools of bigger fish in the 6 to 8 pound range on the flats. Once the water temperature drops a little more, the bigger fish will start to move onto the flats in the creeks.

Tackle to use for bonefish is an 8 weight fly rod, with 10 pound 10 foot leader, #6 flies in light-medium tan or light pink colors. With a spin rod, use a 6 foot long rod and artificial or live bait on a hook.

In October, you will still have chances at catching barracuda, sharks, tarpon and permit on the deeper flats. With these we recommend a heavier rod: 10 weight fly rod with 12 to 15 pound test leader, and at least a 10 foot long rod. Use bigger fly than what you would use for a bonefish to catch tarpon or permit. As for the barracuda and shark, you will need a wire leader with a trolling feather.

Plan your next fishing adventure to Abaco. What tackle you don’t have we will supply, so come enjoy a day on the water and I will put you on the fish! We also offer bottom fishing and snorkeling trips.
