Abaco Flats Forecast – April 2012

The water is warming up and big fish are already on the flats. The warmer water not only brings bigger fish, it brings more fish to the flats.

Recently, one Saturday morning, we headed out with a client to do a little wading on the beautiful flats of Cherokee Sound. After casting at a few with no hook-ups, we spotted a big bonefish tailing about 40 feet down from us. One cast was made, two strikes and bam! He takes it! The battle went on for a while, and when we got him close enough to pick him up, it was a big fish; nine plus pounds. What a catch; every fisherman’s dream, the big Granddaddy Bone! This big guy was caught on an 8-weight fly rod with a #6 hook, light tan color with rubber legs.

We recommend using an 8-weight fly rod with 10 foot, 10 pound leader, with #6 flies, in light to medium tan colors, or light pink. On a spinning rod, our recommendation is a six footer with 8 to 10 pound test line; live or artificial bait will get the job done.

When headed to Abaco, whatever gear you don’t have, we will supply! So come give bonefishing a try; you will be hooked! We also offer reef fishing and snorkeling trips. Give us a call.
