Abaco Inshore Forecast – December 2011

Donnie Lowe and Trish Fitzpatrick with a bonefish caught on a fly rod.

December is one of my favorite months for bonefishing. The cooler water and air temperatures are just right, bringing in plenty of fish all over, both large and small. Wading the flats in shallow water and seeing those big bone tails up in the air just feeding away can get you excited. What a thrill to land the fly right next to the bone and see it attack the fly. Man what a ride it gives! December means less schooling fish, but more singles and doubles. On our flats in the northern Bahamas there will be lots of tailing fish averaging 3 to 4 pounds, but expect the occasional 6 to 8 pounder.

For bonefish, try a an eight weight fly rod with ten foot, ten pound test leader using #6 flies, medium tan colors or even light pink—Gotcha, Pink Puffs and Crazy Charlie’s—are the best to use. Or, for light tackle grab a six foot rod with ten pound test line. Artificial or live bait will work.

On the flats you also have a chance to snag mutton snapper, tarpon, permit, barracuda and sharks. If your target is barracuda or sharks, use a heavy rod with at least a 25 to 30 pound test line and a wire leader.

If you’re in Abaco, give me a call to tackle the big bone!
