Abaco Flats Forecast – June 2011

June is a great month for bonefishing and out of my 38 years on the flats, it’s become one of my favorite months. The water is the perfect temperature; it’s like a whole different world out there, schooling bonefish, small and large, all over the flats!

For tackle, I recommend using an 8-weight fly rod with a 10-pound leader, at least 10 feet long, along with number 6 flies, light to medium tan and light pink. If you prefer spinning tackle, my recommendation is a 6-foot rod with 10-pound test line. The fish are hungry so both artificial and live bait will work.

Once you’ve found your fish (look for nervous water or tailing bones), cast ahead and in front of them, and work your bait across their path. Sometimes the fish will grab it immediately, other times you’ll have to tease them into taking the bait. When he does, you’re in for the thrill of a lifetime!

Come to Abaco and spend a day or two on the flats. Bring what you want; we’ll supply the rest.
