Abaco Inshore Fishing Forecast – February 2012

February will continue to be cool with some colder days mixed in. The result? You’ll be seeing bigger fish due to the fact that smaller bonefish don’t like the cold and/or cannot handle the cold. On cool days out on the flats, you’ll start to see fish moving back into the fishing areas with schools of small-to-medium fishing running. In the shallow waters, you’ll spot more tailing fish ranging from 4-to-8 pounds. This is also the perfect time to spot and hookup a permit and barracuda and sharks will still be hanging out on the flats. Towards the end of February, more bones will show up as the water temperature warms up. Suggested tackle? For bonefish, use an 8-weight fly rod with a 10-foot 10-pound leader and #6 flies in light-to-medium tan colors and light pink. If using light spin tackle, stick with a 6-foot rod with 8-to-10 pound test line. Live or artificial bait will work. If you’re headed my way, remember what tackle you don’t have, we will. Come on out and spend a day, two or more on the flats and let’s catch us some fish!
