Abaco Inshore Fishing Forecast – May 2011

Dana Lowe releasing a seven pound bonefish.

From April straight through May, bonefishing has picked up. We’re seeing a lot of schooling fish, both big and small, on the flats. Daily catches have been in the double digits, from 10-to-20 per day. Permit has been spotted on the flats every other day, but not many are being caught. With the warmer water temperatures, plenty of barracuda and mutton snappers have moved onto the flats. The month of May will continue to improve the number of fish on the flats, so that means a lot more opportunity to catch a bone.

Recommended tackle for May is an 8-weight fly rod with a 10-pound leader at least 10-to-12 feet long. Number 6 flies in light to medium tan colors, and light pink works best. For the bigger fish, like barracuda and shark, a 9-weight fly rod will work better. For lighter tackle spin rod, choose a 6 foot rod with 10 pound test line. Artificial or live bait will work.
