In September, the water in Abaco’s creeks is a little warm for bonefish, so they hang out on flats near deeper waters. They do this because the tidal flow rotates often to keep the water temperature cooler then further back in the creeks. Out on the bigger flats you will find big schools of bonefish ranging all sizes. You will have a chance to catch some fish that are tailing, mudding and also just passing by.
For catching bones, we recommend an 8-weight fly rod with a 10-foot 10-pound leader. Light pink and medium to light tan No. 6 flies work best or you can use a light spin rod 6-foot with 10-or-12 pound test line. Live or artificial bait will work. Also this time of year, we carry a heavier rod and reel since there is a better shot at catching a shark, barracuda and even mutton snapper. Permits and tarpon will also be on the flats, so there’s a chance of catching these as well.
When coming to fish with us in Abaco, what tackle you don’t have, we will supply. We also do reef fishing and snorkeling trips, so we can mix up your day with a little of everything.
